Chiquita Leg Recovery Fund!

TL;DR Freelance audio producer broke her leg, needs help funding recovery/PT! Every little bit helps!!

Let me tell you a little bit about my friend Chiquita. Chiquita and I met while we were interning together at NPR in 2012. I knew right away she was someone I wanted to be friends with - her laugh is contagious. Her passion for journalism was unmistakeable. But beneath her sunny personality lurks a dry and sardonic sense of humor.

I've been lucky to call Chiquita my friend for the past six years, and have marveled at her career in podcasting and audio production. After working for NPR's Morning Edition, Chiquita has gone on to produce episodes of Uncivil , Another Round , to Bad With Money With Gaby Dunn  - among others I'm forgetting.

Over Memorial Day weekend, Chiquita, me and two other friends went to Block Island. After a wonderful weekend, the four of us went on a hike down to the beach on the morning of our last day there. It had rained the day before, and the sloping path was narrow and muddy. Chiquita tripped on a rock and fell badly. She broke her fibia in two places, and broke a bone in her ankle.

Chiquita has been recovering steadily, and is making great progress - she can now even bear weight on her leg, though she still can't walk. Unfortunately, freelance audio producing doesn't offer much in the way of pay or benefits - when Chiquita broke her leg, she was uninsured.

"Unfortunately I am not in a position to reinstate healthcare since I lost cobra coverage earlier this year. Was unable to pay 2nd and 3rd months of nearly $700 payment as I ramped up consulting business," Chiquita says. "Since I resigned my job in December I’m ineligible for unemployment and doesn’t count as a job loss-type qualifying event. In short, I am screwed."

While the recovery has been hard, anyone who knows Chiquita knows that her determination cannot be suppressed. "I'm feeling stronger every day and that makes me feel optimistic and motivated," she said.

I started this GoFundMe to help Chiquita get back on her feet and make sure she can pay for physical therapy and other medical expenses to make a full recovery (and because Chiquita is allergic to asking for help). If you can chip in $5, $10 or $20, every bit helps.
