IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE BACKGROUND AND the CAUSE AND WHO WE ARE PLEASE KEEP ON READING!
THE BACKGROUND
Did you know that simply meeting ADA guidelines only grants access to a play area but in fact EXCLUDES many children with disabilities?
ADA is important and gives us a solid foundation, but in many cases it is not enough to ensure inclusion and equality.
Vivienne is a bright and spirited 8yr old girl who was born with a genetic condition which bounds her to a wheelchair.
Vivienne and her friends will soon face a challenge as a well-meant but non-inclusive playground will be raised on public property - right next to their school and used during recess. Although ADA compliant, the play structure will never be accessible to children or caregivers with mobility impairments unless we get your support to expand the playground.
Their peers will have to choose between playing on the playground or playing with their friends who cannot follow physically. This will have negative social and emotional consequences for all our children.
Our fundraiser will ensure the addition of inclusive play equipment and an adequate playground surface, the most expensive part on playgrounds needed for inclusive play.
4 GREAT REASONS TO SUPPORT OUR CAMPAIGN
· You'll be part of supporting the next generation of children to be compassionate and value inclusive interaction, connection and friendship beyond ability.
If children grow up in an inclusive and inviting environment where we support people’s strengths instead of weaknesses, all children will naturally learn that “we all have something to contribute.” We will not have those discussions about economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights to the extent we had in the past and still have today.
· You'll allow us to enhance the existing playground so no child will be left behind and create an example for future projects across the nation.
· You’ll support your own community by spreading awareness about misperceptions. Minimum ADA requirements DO NOT create inclusive spaces.
· You'll enjoy some great perks including our guide on inclusive play and community spaces, the new release of Robin Miller’s book “The Three Friends” about challenges of non-inclusive playgrounds, inclusion artwork by our young artists, t-shirts or you can surprise someone YOU care about with a unique gift or support your local school, library or organization with the copy of our guide or book you’ll receive.
