WE MADE IT TO NATIONALS!!
Hi everyone! Evan, Sadie, Alexis, Kevin, and Rebecca have all qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament this year, and it is being held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With that being said, we really hope to be able to raise money to attend nationals and represent little Carson City.
We would appreciate any sort of donation to help us get to Florida! If you are interested in what the money will be used for, here is a break down of our costs:
~$2,800 Hotel rooms for the week
~$5,200 Airfare
~$524.00 Rental Car
~$886.00 Debate Registration fee
We will be paying for all of our meals as none are provided, so that cost has not been factored in.
Alexis: I’m an 18 years old and a senior at Carson High School. I’m originally from Oklahoma but I moved to Nevada when I was about 8. I have an older brother and I have lived with my dad for 18 years. Most people would think that I have such a great life but their wrong I hide behind my broken smile and act like everything’s okay, but ever since I joined speech and debate I know what it means to have a family that means everything to you. My dad is super supportive because he did speech and debate back when he was my age and tells me to be safe and good luck.
Kevin: I am a huge wrestling and movie fan. My father always had this contagious smile and would always keep everyone happy, he was one of my role models. My father passed away in 2013, since then I have tried to be optimistic. I was born in Oakland, CA but have lived most of my life in Carson City. Most of my life has been moving around; but Carson High School gave me the great chance to join in the school’s debate team. I wanted to pursue something different, my coach put us in groups of the similar interests and I ended up partnering with Alexis.
Becca: Since I was eight years old I’ve dreamt of being a criminal lawyer. This lead to me falling in love with English, and I have fallen in love with the art of speaking, thinking, and arguing. Once I entered high school I joined speech and debate. My freshman year the thought of going to the speech and debate national competition seemed to be such a stretch. I am passionate about debate, tennis, track, and writing. I really found myself through my competition piece about eating disorders, something I have struggled with.
Sadie & Evan: We have been debate partners for 1 1/2 years competing in public forum (2 v 2) debate. The 2017-2018 debate year left us walking away with three 1st place wins, one 3rd place win, 4th place at the State Championship tournament, and undefeated in our district national qualifier tournament.
Sadie: I am a senior at Carson High School and a Sophomore at Western Nevada College through the JumpStart College program. I have been a part of Carson's Speech and Debate team for all four years of high school and I hope to continue debating in college. I plan to finish my undergrad at Portland State University in the Fall of 2018, and eventually, I hope to go to law school. I am an active member in the community and coach gymnastics at Tumbleweeds Gymnastics. I am also a member of CHS's honor society, link crew, and Future Business Leaders of America.
Evan: I am a junior at Carson high, born and raised in Carson City. I love math and have a photographic memory. I enjoy learning and speaking French with my sister. I enjoy being involved in a wide range of academic activities at Carson High School including Shark Tank, AP courses, and being elected senior class president for next year. Outside of school I like trivia, music, especially 21 pilots, playing piano, and solving math puzzles.
