COCOA House opened 20 years ago in 1996, but it is in danger of not making it through its 21st year!
COCOA House is a free after-school, academic enrichment program offered to disadvantaged students from Schenectady, NY. In addition to offering one-on-one tutoring, learning games and activities, and a full meal to all attendees, students from Union College gain the opportunity to work with the community, gaining important leadership and organizational skills as well as high levels of compassion and empathy. This experience greatly impacts both the COCOA House students and the Union College students by improving achievement at both ends and allowing these two different groups of people to establish meaningful connections with one another. The result is a change in the lives of two generations as they strive to develop and succeed.
Due to an unprecedented funding crisis, we are having trouble paying for several necessary components of the program, including electricity ($1540), internet/phone ($225), maintenance ($150), and security ($90).
