Coconut Tree Project with friends in Abricots !!!
Three Years after Hurricane Matthew hit my region in Haiti, the environment is showing us how resilient it is by painting the land green again. New trees are slowly growing and giving life to the region and we are so grateful for that.
Nevertheless, the trees that have supported the farmer’s businesses and livelihood have not grown back. The mango, cocoa, coconut, and abricot trees native to the region that have been lost and will take more time and effort to recover.
This year, we have decided to celebrate the month of Agriculture by investing in one particular crop that meant a lot in our culture. Coconut trees have played a very important role for us from cooking, to their medicinal properties, to their importance in business ventures. After Matthew, they have become very rare.
Our goal is to restore some of the coconut trees we've lost in the region.
We'd like to start by planting at least 300 coconut trees as our pilot project.
These trees will be distributed to farmers who are part of a farmers association I work with, in Batis, Abricots, Grand'Anse, Haiti. My frequent interactions with the group of farmers will allow me to follow their progress and measure the impact of this pilot project.
This project will cost $2500, but most of the cost will be offered by the members of the association in the form of community service. I will personally take responsibility for transportation and other logisticcosts associated with the project.
The money we are trying to raise will be used to purchase the plants themselves. After we buy the coconut plants, they will be transported to Abricots, distributed and planted. We will stay in touch with the recipients and follow the progress of the planted trees.
Please help us make this possible, by contributing to our special Plant Project fundraiser.
$35 will buy a dozen coconut trees.
We are trying to make this happen as soon as possible.
Please share our campaign with your friends, and consider making a donation towards this cause.
Thank you very much.
