Colin died in June 2016 at age 23. There are no words to adequately describe the caliber of Colin’s character. He loved and valued his family, friends, and partner beyond description, he was thoughtful in all things, and he lived with the knowledge and truth of his salvation. At the time of his death, he was a recent college graduate, getting ready to visit his family, a few months shy of starting his Ph.D., and overjoyed with our decision to get married. He was so excited to spend the summer with his family, to start graduate school, and to begin the next chapter of our life. Colin’s death is a devastating experience for all of us, and while we know that he is whole and rejoicing, we are burdened and heartbroken by the loss. To say that Colin is loved and missed does not capture the true level of longing and desperation of being without him.

In the months since Colin’s death it has become increasingly important to find ways to honor his life, as well as the great love and great loss we have experienced. For those who know Colin, you know that he was an extraordinary man, and he left an immeasurable void in each of our lives. Colin’s death has brought grief for the loss of his life, but also grief for his future, dreams, goals, and plans. Colin had so much love for his family, his friends, his education, and for all of his future adventures, and we want to honor those things in the best way we can. It is a crucial part of my grieving process to honor Colin and maintain a continued bond with him, and I want to give others the opportunity for this as well.
One of Colin's biggest goals was to be a psychology professor in a university setting where he could be actively involved in research and teaching, but most importantly, where he could contribute to student success and learning. Colin was an incredible student, he was dedicated to and passionate about his work, and was eager to support other students in their education. Because Colin is now not able to be a professor, one of the ways we have chosen to honor him is to establish a scholarship in his name at Pacific University. We feel that this is a wonderful way to support students in their education, uphold this important value of Colin’s, and honor his memory and legacy in a meaningful way.

In addition to the scholarship fund, we have dedicated a bench and memorial plaque to Colin on Pacific’s campus in Forest Grove. Colin made a significant impact at Pacific and we are honored to memorialize that in a permanent way. This is a special place for Colin, it is where he established so many of his plans and goals, grew so much in his education and identity, met the person he planned to marry, and started to shape the rest of his life. We want to honor Colin in a physical space on campus, in a scenic spot that overlooks all of his favorite areas, where he spent his time, and a place dedicated to remembering and appreciating what an amazing person we are blessed to know.

The scholarship fund will be open to contributions for the next several years. During this time we hope to receive enough funding to sustain a long-term scholarship at Pacific, and in a few years, it will be allocated to outstanding students pursuing higher education at our institution.
Please feel free to share this with anyone who may be interested in contributing. We are overwhelmingly thankful for all of the prayers, kind words, and support we have received in the wake of Colin’s death, and we are excited, and humbled, to be able to develop a platform for everyone to continue to honor Colin’s life and memory through this scholarship fund.

With love,
Caedy
