Color Bar: Cape Town

Donation protected
I am a visual artist and a recent graduate of Duke's MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts. In October of 2016, I'll be traveling to South Africa to begin the international segment of Color Bar, a documentary project I have already launched in America.

Color Bar is an interview-driven documentary project about Black masculinity. I ask Black men of all ages to share their perspectives on topics many of them have never had the opportunity to discuss, including but not limited to: love, family, colorism, and vulnerability. This gives Black men who are usually demonized by society the opportunity to tell their own stories. These humanizing narratives of Black life are presented in the hopes of moving beyond the negative stereotypes of Black men in American culture.

I am being award a fellowship from Institute for Creative Arts (ICA) at the University of Cape Town, to conduct Color Bar interviews in Cape Town and to exhibit the project. I am very excited about the opportunity, and I can't wait to hear the men's stories. Because the fellowship only covers part of the total cost of travel, lodging, and project/equipment expenses, I would be extremely grateful for any financial help to help me get to South Africa!
