Columbus Day Float

Donation protected
My name is Pascal Gangi and I am a graduate from Wentworth Institute of Technology with a degree in Electrical-Mechanical Engineering. I was born in Sicily and moved to Revere at a very young age. My Sicilian heritage is something that I hold dear to my heart and I admire the art work that is presented in many of the traditional feasts from my hometown Sciacca. Five years ago, I started an art group for Italia Unita, a non-profit organization that proudly celebrates, coordinates, and promotes many events in effort to maintain the level of appreciation and pride in Italian Culture.

The art group which was created is compiled of various volunteers from the Boston area. The art group mission is to bring the art tradition and techniques from Sciacca, Sicily to the Boston area through the construction of giant paper Mache floats that showcase art works at local events and parades. We have been able to build floats to display for the community thanks to fundraising and donations from organizations, the public, or private companies.

Previously,  we have displayed artwork on floats at the East Boston Columbus Day Parade in 2010, 2012 and 2014; at the Revere and North End Columbus day parade in 2013,at the Wakefield Fourth of July parade in 2010 and 2011, and at  the North End Fisherman Feast from 2012-2014. I have attached some photos of our floats at the bottom of this letter. We have also organized two Carnevale events to represent Italian culture at Spinelli’s and Zumix in East Boston. At these events, a local dance center has showcased both American and Italian styles of dance. Italia Unita’s success has been featured by local news outlets as well as on Italian Rai Television.

Columbus Day parade in East Boston in 2016

For the Columbus Day parade in East Boston, Italia Unita would like to create a float that represents the unity of Italy, a great theme for Italian Heritage month and for the Italian Community in Revere. To represent this, the art group has decided to create a giant popup book with main characters popping out. In this particular page of the book we have Giuseppe Garibaldi, a well-known general that helped unite Italy, who is riding a horse into the crowd celebrating the first day of the Italian Unity. On the right side of the float we have a young lady representing Italy. The float dimensions will be 4 feet in width, 12 feet in height and 8 feet in length.

Giovanni Muscarnera

We are currently bringing an Italian young artist student from Sciacca, Sicly to the Boston area to help us out on our next project. The reasoning behind this effort stems from the current economic hardships happening in Italy. We would like to bring this Italian Art Major student to educate us on the Italian art tradition in ceramic and float building as well as introduce the Italian Art flair to America. This would reflect a student exchange program where the student would get a chance to not only teach us new art techniques, but also get a chance to experience the American culture. I got acquainted to while traveling during my travel to my home town during the Carnevale season. We became very close while we worked together in Sicily during float construction. He has proven he has plenty of experience and talent. Please see examples of his work through the attachments below.
