Support Dam Line 9 Blockade!

Donation protected
Dam Line 9 is a blockade of an Enbridge construction site in Innerkip, Ontario. A coalition of people from throughout South-western Ontario came together to shut down this work indefinitely, to prevent Enbridge from upgrading Line 9 to carry diluted bitumen from the Alberta Tar Sands.

This site is currently undergoing a valve installation 500m from the Thames River, yet this construction will not add any protection against a leak of toxic diluted bitumen into this important water source as it is located on the far side of the river. Line 9 is the same age and design as the Enbridge pipeline which caused the largest in-land oil spill in American history. Enbridge has identified more than 12,000 flaws in Line 9’s structure, and the line has already leaked at least 35 times in less than 40 years.

As of August 9th, the site has been blockaded for 5 days, and we intend to keep it shut down indefinitely. Donations are needed primarily for supplies and for the legal fees of activists who have already received legal threats from the police and from Enbridge. Your donations boost the confidence of these land defenders and are a very real way of contributing to the struggle against the Tar Sands and in defense of the Great Lakes watershed!

Accountability:

This page is administered by Cedar Rabbit, an organizer from Hamilton who has been involved with Dam Line 9 organizing and other actions against Line 9 and the Tar Sands. I am in close contact with the six arrestees and have been asked to take on this role by others organizing around this issue throughout the region. This page is linked to on the main Dam Line 9 blog, damline9.tumblr.com, as well as on the facebook pages of many or the organizers. This fundraiser is strongly endorsed by the groups who organized the action.

Funds raised will be spent primarily in support of those arrested during this an any other action against Line 9. We support all Line 9 defendants regardless of their charge. This support includes but is not limited to:
-securing legal council
-providing transportation to and from court dates and meetings with council
-Any resources required for mounting a political defense of the charges, such as court support or media
-Any fines or penalties that result from the charges.
Any funds left over after the resolution of all charges will be used for further organizing in Southern Ontario against the transportation of Tar Sands oil through our watersheds, with a continued emphasis on direct action.

The funds raised here will be transferred to the bank account of a group in Hamilton that has agreed to provide logistical support to the legal defense by holding and distributing funds. I will manage these funds, withdrawing them in cash or by writing cheques to cover the costs outlined above. As part of my role co-ordinating support, I will remain in regular contact with all the defendants and their other supporters and will meet with them as needed to provide them with funds.
