My name is Jermaine de Wind, 27 years old suffering with a life
threatening disease called Glioblastoma. Life expectancy rate, a
total of 1.5 years with treatment.
When I turned 18, I suffered an epileptic attack and was rushed to the
ER, during my stay in the hospital doctors discovered a tumor in my
brain. The brain tumor (what we now know is called Glioblastoma, also
referred to as GBM) is a fourth degree tumor, a very severe and
aggressive form of cancer.
The degree of severeness usually refers to the length of time a tumor
grows back, diagnosis usually being 1- 1.5 (with treatment) weeks to
months without treatment.
Annual treatment consist of surgery followed by 6 weeks of daily
radiation and chemo tablets. After the six weeks period is over, a 6
months’ timeframe follows and for a weeklong, every month more chemo
is administered.
Usually people who suffer with GBM that seek treatment will have their
brain tumor fully grown back within a 6 months’ timeframe. I was one
of the “lucky” ones, meaning that my tumor was not growing back as
fast as expected. I am fortunate enough to say that I am one of 5%
that is still living since a diagnosis was discovered in 2008.
After hearing that my brain tumor was not growing at a rapid pace -
and was reduced in size I started living my life- as best I could. I
started a family and was blessed with two healthy children Hayley and
Noah.
Unfortunately luck was running out on me- and right before Christmas I
received bad news yet again, I was diagnosed with 8 tumors in my
brain. I went back to treatment trying surgery and chemo unfortunately
to no effect.
The future-
I desperately need Antineoplastic-therapy in Houston Texas they do not
offer this type of treatment in the Netherlands. I would love to have
the chance to see my children growing up, to have a happy and healthy
life alongside my girlfriend Lisette.
In the Netherlands chances of recovery being 0% opposed to 50% in the
US. Unfortunately this type of treatment is not covered through
insurance and comes at a high price.
Someone that suffers with GBM will have the following symptoms:
• Headache
• Nausea
• trouble speaking and swallowing
• loss of feeling in arms and legs as well as
• mood swings
• memory loss
