Cyclocross Nationals on Super 8

So, I have this idea ...
My name is Drew Coleman and I am a video content creator here in Portland, Oregon and I have spent the past 5 months capturing our local bike racing scene for my YouTube channel "Local Cycling Network " (Subscribe to the channel so you get notified when the film is published). The look of my videos, while digital, have an analogue or film look to them ... at least I try to create that look. Through my work the past 5 months, specifically on one recent video focusing on a local professional team, I made contact with two photographers in California who shoot stills in medium and large format film and they got me thinking. Rather than fake the film look, why not go out and actually film?
So I did just that. One roll. Black and White. The look immediately took me back to my childhood, with the interesting twist of seeing people I know today. It is by no means perfect, but I learned a lot. To see the result, the film is inside the video posted above.
So my idea is that I would like to film the 2018 United States Cyclocross National Championships this coming January on my Super 8 camera. Due to the cost and distance of the project, in order to make it happen, I want you to collaborate with me and still photographs Michael Jasinski and Andrew Shimizu (whose work you see in this listing).
Any funds you donate will go directly to the costs of the project. The funds will ....
... Enable me to get to Reno, Nevada for the races. Flight to and from will cost $250.
... Purchase the film at the heart of the project and pay for processing and scanning (all three aspects cost approximately $100 total per role for 2:30 of footage at 24 frames per second). My goal is to be able to shoot at least 12 roles of film - 7 color, 5 black and white.
... Cover cost of film and processing for photography collaborators Michael Jasinski and Andrew Shimizu
... Cover costs of film for a Polaroid Instamatic camera I will be using as part of opening and closing.. $15 per cassette. Total of 3 film cassettes.
.... offset the cost of the camera I will be using (a 1983 Canon 814 xl-s). It is inmint condition, tested and in perfect working order. It has already been purchased at $400.
.... cover any other unforseen costs that undoubtedly will arise.
Money raised beyond the goal will go towards improving audio capture and recording quality, purchase of travel cases and additional Super 8 film for more coverage.
People or Sponsors who make donations in excess of $500 will be individually credited as "Presented by" at the outset of the film and credited at the end of the film for the contribution.
People or Sponsors who make donations of $250 will be credited at the end of the film along with others at the same level of contribution.
I have a very clear vision. The final edit will have a decidedly vintage feel and look to it. As mentioned it will be built from Super 8 color and black and white film, Michael and Andrew's color and black and white still photography as well as polaroid instamatic stills. I want it to document the National Championships in a fresh, fun and nostalgic manner. I will focus on the Men's and Women's elite championship for the race footage as well as the crowd, the venue, the team areas ... really as many aspects of the event both inside and outside the race course tape as I can. Audio will be challenging as the film is totally silent. An attempt to capture voice and match in post will be made, but it will rely primarily on ambient audio of the event.
To make a film like this has been something of a dream of mine since I was a kid. I get to do all the work and creation, and you get to be a part of making something very unique take place. You will also get to see what I have in mind.
I am so grateful that you would even consider donating. That being said, I am in a hurry to make it happen. The races are happening in about a month, so please don't hesitate. I will need to order film by January 1. Donate a little or donate a lot ... everything helps.
Thank you again for contributing. Check out my YouTube Channel and be sure to SUBSCRIBE to it so you will be notified when the finished product is published.
