Cycle to Recycle

I have the best job in the world, I teach 4th grade in a suburb of Rochester, NY. Based on observations and the discussions I have had with my class, I have decided to create and implement a recycling and sustainability program in my school district. My goal is to help teach the students about growing/buying local produce and sustainability as well focus on growing organic. It will be a student centered project and students will be the ones planting, maintaining, harvesting and consuming the produce.
To raise money and awareness for my cause, I will be doing a solo bike trip starting from Seattle, Washington all the way to a small little town called Phippsburg, Maine which is roughly about 3,400 miles away. 100% of the money raised goes toward the recycling program and our sustainablitity project at the school. All of my expenses on the road will come from my pocket and ideally I will spend less than $250 dollars on the road while meeting great Americans (and Canadians) and traveling across this beautiful continent.
Children are often not exposed to many of the problems of the world, that is a good thing, as well as a bad thing. One thing that we looked at as a class this year is how far food travels before it actually lands on our plates and the students were amazed that often the food is shipped from across the country, if not overseas, to a local grocery store that is only a few blocks from our house. Students do not realize the expense of shipping and the pollution it creates, this is why I started promoting growing/buying local and focusing on sustainability. Another topic that the students were unaware of, is the pollution in our oceans, mostly plastic pollution. We looked at the “Great Garbage Patch” in the middle of the ocean and it was amazing to realize there is a pile of garbage TWICE the size of Texas floating in our oceans, and that is only one of the MULTIPLE patches we have in our oceans.
This illuminated for me the significance of instilling environmental awareness in children, as well as empowering children to be leaders in conservational growth. I am here to ask your help to support our cause to go green and “Cycle to Recycle” for the future of America and the world.
Along with the sustainablity project, I will be starting a “Recycling Club” at my school. The club will consist of students who sign up for the club and it will run all year long. We will place different boxes in each classroom, one for returnable bottles, and another for general recyclable material. Each week students will go around to the different classrooms and collect the recyclables, we will use all of the money from the returnable cans for supplies for our project. The recycling club will teach students about how to recycle not only returnable bottles and cans, but also about paper, plastics and metals that are recyclable.
Please help create not only a boundless learning atmosphere for these students, but I urge you to also help cultivate awareness in all children of the impact we have when we conserve, reduce, re-use, and recycle. Join me in teaching children the ways in which we can continue to keep our Earth green and promote sustainability.
