Cynthia left her home on Aug. 26, 1976, and headed to the Fox Twin Theater in Covina. Her boyfriend was sick with the flu and the friends she called had either already seen the film or didn’t want to go.
Cynthia never returned home.
The next morning, Cynthia's relatives went to the theater and discovered the car she used, a 1963 white Chevrolet station wagon, was backed into a parking spot behind the movie theater. There was no sign of Cynthia. Her family filed a missing person’s report.
Cynthia came from a family with three children. She was a recent graduate of Charter Oak High School when she went missing.
Cynthia’s disappearance became the oldest missing person case at the Glendora Police Department. The department reopened the case in 2014. Detectives followed a trail, which led them to San Bernardino County, where they discovered the missing person case was a murder case. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department took over the case and the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against the suspect, convicted rapist Larry James Allred.
The now 62-year-old Allred pleaded guilty to killing Cynthia, and was sentenced on Oct. 17, 2016 to life in prison.

The scholarship will be maintained by Charter Oak Community Scholarship Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization.
