Disney Performance Trip
Tax deductible
The mission of the Governor Morehead School for the Blind is to prepare students to achieve their highest individual potential. It is their duty to offer our students experiences that will enrich their lives and enhance their education. The high school choir was recently selected to perform at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, on December 5, 2017. This is quite an honor and the result of many months of hard work and dedication.
GMS students face many challenges every day. Because this is something that requires resources above and beyond what students' families already provide, EYE is seeking ways to minimize and perhaps even avoid placing this additional financial burden on them. The Governor Morehead School believes that no child should lack for experiences that can help them grow and learn. By participating in this trip, students will practice Orientation and Mobility skills that are simply not part of our everyday life at school. Most of these students have not had much, if any, experience with air travel, going through Security, finding the gates, boarding, finding airplane bathrooms, etc., so this is an awesome opportunity to acquire some valuable experience for everyone. Traveling in an unfamiliar area in a new city and in the theme park is a fantastic learning opportunity for using canes in new places, using monoculars for the low vision students, localizing sounds in unfamiliar travel sites, etc. Simply getting up on a stage and performing music for others allows them to show leadership and develop socially, emotionally, and physically. These students have learned poise, confidence, self-expression, perseverance, and how to perform under great stress. By standing on that stage they will show the world that despite being visually impaired they are no different than any other person who loves music.
Going on this trip will take a great deal of money. We hope that if you or your organization is able to support us with a donation that you would choose to do so. We need to cover the costs for twenty participants’ airfare, lodging, tickets, and meals for three days. Any amount that we receive is greatly appreciated and will go directly to covering these expenses.
