Books for Preschoolers to Promote Literacy
WHAT WE ARE DOING
The Ligonier Valley School District Foundation (Ligonier, PA) is sponsoring a local chapter of the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. (www.imaginationlibrary,com).
WHO WE ARE
The LVSDF is a 501c3 that raises funds for our local school system. We sponsor grants to teachers or school for extra projects such as buying a new sound system for our high school, providing funding forthe STEM team to travel to nationals, purchasing stream study probes for our middle school science program. We also provide food for needy students to take home over each weekend and supply clothing as needed for all students. This year, this program grew from 75 cildren to 140 children per week! A full list of our completed projects is available on our website. This year, I started a chapter of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to encourage reading to preschoolers.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
The Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program mails one age-appropriate book each month per year per child. Research has found that presschoolers who are read to on a regular basis enter school with an advantage of a higher vocabulary and more creativity.
Children ages birth through 5 who will attend our school district are eligible to receive books. Each year- long subscription is $25 per child for the year. The program is to be free to parents so that income does not determine whether or not a child can participate.
Our Books2GO program collects used children's books to send home in the weekly backpacks for children on free/reduced lunch. Sixty-seven percent (67%) of children in our northern districy qualify for free/reduced lunch, while our town participation rate is 40%. My goal is to begin the Imagination Library to generate excitement about books and reading. After age 5, the students can move into our Books2Go program at no cost.
We began enrollment in the program on October 1, 2016. I held some fundraisers, hoping to meet the needs of 100 students this year. However, the response to the program was far greater than I imagined. As of today, December 30, I've registered 164 kids, 52 of them within the past 4 days! So now I'm in a mild panic. As a result, we are in need of more funds to accommodate all of these children. I hope you will help us provide this opportunity for our children. Thank you for your consideration.
