Bernard lives with his family in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, where he settled after fleeing the genocide in Rwanda during the mid-nineties. His wife was killed before his eyes, and he was forced to pay the militia five dollars so that it would be quick and merciful.

Bernard now lives in one of the poorest countries in the world, but rich in rare minerals - partly a result of past and present colonial greed. Abject poverty is a vicious circle and difficult to escape. An intelligent and educated man, Bernard needs help to buy a truck and funds to start his own business carrying merchandise to sell into Goma.

I became aware of Bernard's situation after watching a documentary movie. Although the subject was the state of the coltan mines in the jungle regions, his story was a strong feature of the presentation.

It crossed my mind how easy it is to succumb to guilt and anger when faced with the truth about the exploitation of poorer countries and people, but these emotions should have no place in our present or our future. Now is a time for action, so that we may all move towards a future when sharing is the norm and not the exception.

Bernard's situation is urgent, and just a small amount would alleviate much of his family's suffering.  Even the prospect of being helped by strangers in another country has brought hope and joy. One of the best ways to donate money to the Congo is to help a family, just like yours.
