Doug's Medical and Living Expenses

Douglas Mumby Jr. was in need of a kidney and liver transplant.
In the fall of 2016, Doug was hospitalized with liver failure. The medical staff removed large amount of extra fluids from his body and they hoped with extreme diet changes his liver would rebound and he would fully recover.
These changes made a big difference for about a year, and medications eliminated the need for further fluid drainage. However, the medications stopped being as effective just before Thanksgiving 2017.
When the medications lost their effectiveness, doctors from Henry Ford Hospital started pursuing getting Doug on the liver transplant list. This process included several months of testing to determine Doug’s likelihood of surviving the operation before having family (his two younger brothers, Christopher and Tom) tested for compatibility.
In January the doctor had to take Doug off some of his medication that was keeping fluid from building up as quickly because they found it was doing damage to his kidney and they didn't want to be looking at a double transplant. Doug had lost use of one kidney due to an infection when he was a child. Without this medicine Doug’s body fills up with excess fluid. He has weekly appointments to remove 7 liters or more of fluid buildup from his body.
Doug and his wife, Amy, went down to Henry Ford in Detroit and spent two days doing testing. Unfortunately, the cardiologist had a couple concerns about his heart. After additional testing the Cardiologist gave the okay and checked what was thought to be the last box for getting Doug officially on the transplant list, and moving family testing forward at the end of January.
While waiting on insurance approval, the doctors kept monitoring all his organ functions. His functioning kidney took a turn for the worse and it was determined that Doug would need both a liver and a kidney transplant. This made Christopher and Tom ineligible to donate as they will not take two donations from the same live donor. We needed to be blessed with a deceased donor match instead since both organs have to come from the same donor to minimize rejection.
On Sunday, March 11th, Doug’s blood pressure dropped to a dangerous level and he experienced some confusion and hallucinations. He was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit by ambulance. Doctors found some toxins in his blood and worked to rule out an infection to make sure there were no surprises. Doug is back home now and feeling a little "better". He has insurance approval for liver and kidney transplants and is on the transplant waiting list. Now he is focused on staying healthy and being ready for when the call comes.
Doug had already been working a reduced schedule for some time, but at the end of February, the doctors ordered him to stop working all together. Doug is unable to work for the foreseeable future.
On June 13th, Doug received his liver and kidney transplants! Doug does have medical insurance which will pay for a large portion of the transplant operation but will have to come up with $7,000-$10,000 or more out of pocket just for their portion. He and Amy have already used up precious sick leave in the time leading up to this point, and Doug will still be unable to work for 6 months or longer. We are continuing to raise money to assist Doug and his family while they go through this difficult time.
Douglas and Amy have two sons, Rembrandt (Remy) who is a Senior at Lansing Catholic, and Michelangelo (Mickey) who is a Freshman at Lansing Catholic. Yep, Doug is an artist! They are also Nana and Papa to Christen's (Amy's daughter's) two girls, Evelyn (8) and Hazel (2).
Doug turned 49 on January 20, 2018. A donor has given him a second chance at life and we are praying that he will live many more years. Please join us in praying for Douglas Mumby Jr. to remain strong as he recovers from his surgery.
