The Driving Women in Tech Journey
DrivingWomenInTech.com

Through their initiation, Driving Women in Tech, Women in Tech World is conducting a Canada-wide research tour to understand and record the experiences of women in technology and to promote vibrant women in tech communities across the country.

The Driving Women in Tech tour is driving across the country in a branded RV, lovingly called Chitty Chitty Van Van. The tour started on September 6, 2017, on the west coast (Vancouver headquarters), before heading north to the Yukon. The tour is now on its way east, heading across the country towards the Maritime provinces. The goal is to connect with all capital cities and major tech hubs, as well as any spots identified by our community.

The team out on the road is supported by a network of volunteers throughout the country, including provincial ambassadors who are plugged into the tech communities within their region.

Along the road, Driving Women in Tech will:

•  Facilitate 50 community forums across the country.
•  Connect with over 10,000 people from diverse communities and sectors.
•  Create and share a National Report on the experiences of women in tech in Canada (barriers, challenges, successes, resources).
•  Create a set of Playbooks (regional recommendations) to facilitate more inclusive and diverse tech communities in Canada.
•  Share our findings with community members and stakeholders to ensure active steps are taken as a result of Driving Women in Tech.

Who are Women in Tech World

Alicia Close and Elena Yugai came together to create Women in Tech World in January of 2017. They wanted to provide professional development and education to support women in leadership roles, as well as support women generally within the tech industry. Although many women have reached out, there is currently no data to reflect the impact of the resources that have been provided. Thus, Women in Tech World decided to do their own research, through Driving Women in Tech.

Alicia and Melanie Ewan, COO and Director of Community-Based Research, have been on the road since September 7, 2017. And what a journey they’ve had so far!

Why launch Go Fund Me now?

In the spring, Women in Tech World ran a Kickstarter campaign with 87 backers, helping fund the basic needs to get Driving Women in Tech on the road.

When visiting the first cities on the tour in early September, event attendees showed outstanding support and encouragement. It was the communities' suggestion that Women in Tech World also set up this Go Fund Me in order to raise additional funds for the tour.

The biggest expenses of any road trip are the hidden costs of simply being on the road. Funds raised from this Go Fund Me campaign will cover the following costs for the two-month mission:

• Power Up - Fuel to get across the country ($2,500)
• Keep A Float - Ferry costs over the water to Newfoundland ($1,300)
• Lunch Money - Food for our volunteers on the road ($12,200)*
• Rest Up - Accommodations for our volunteers, from camp sites to couch surfing ($4,575)*

*Every effort will be made to keep costs to a minimum. Driving Women in Tech wants to ensure there’s a focus on the mission while having enough financial flexibility for those volunteering their time to reasonably continue the two-month tour.
