Please Help Sandglass Theater Take D-Generation to London!
Dear Sandglass Supporters,
Sandglass has recently been offered an opportunity for D-Generation to leave the country: to participate in the Suspense Festival in London, England, from October 31 to November 1, 2015. Suspense is one of the premier puppetry festivals in Europe, and we are very excited for D-Generation to be seen there!
D-Generation, a theater piece performed with puppets, explores the rich creative potential and ability to communicate that exists in people with late-stage dementia. Their words, images, and imaginations yield work that is poetic, humorous, and often mysterious. From these stories, Sandglass Theater forms scenes of the inner lives of the characters, and creates a piece that reflects the stigma and the acceptance, the despair and the joy of both the person with dementia and their caregivers and family members.
D-Generation’s collected stories, which are associative and non-linear in nature, were gathered by Sandglass Theater’s performers during 20 visits to care facilities. At the Pine Heights at Brattleboro Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, circles of people with dementia were guided through a story-making method called TimeSlips, a creative model developed by Anne Basting. The results reveal the unstoppable presence of humor and playfulness alongside the dark reality of the disease. An interesting series of photo-booth responses to the piece can be found on the Sandglass website along with video vignettes from the show.
Because of the costs of the trip (transportation, accommodation, food, and freight), we found we needed to raise $6500 to make it possible. An incredibly generous donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, recently contributed $4000, and has encouraged Sandglass to pursue online fundraising in order to raise the remaining $2500.
Would you be willing to donate to this wonderful project? All donors will be named on our website and in the show program, and everyone is cordially invited to come see the show—at September's Puppets in the Green Mountains festival in Vermont, and on tour in London.
Donations of any size are welcome. Working together, we can make it happen!
With many thanks,
Eric, Ines, Kirk, Sabrina, and the Sandglass Team
