Air conditioning for EBSS (P&C)

East Brisbane Parents and Citizens’ Association Air Conditioning Drive
We all know how hard it is to concentrate and be productive during hot temperatures – especially in Queensland. Successive Queensland governments have provided funds to air condition state and non-state schools north of latitude 20° South; but unfortunately our school is below this line. The East Brisbane State School P&C committee has set up this GoFundMe campaign to provide a comfortable, productive environment for our students – and we need YOUR help!
Air conditioning even just a small school like ours comes with a massive cost, $100 000 to get a system installed in all buildings in fact (see below for a further breakdown). If you decide to help, the East Brisbane State School students, teachers, teacher aides, parents and P&C committee THANK YOU!
We can accept donations from as little as $5 and all donations are tax deductible. In the event that we exceed our fundraising goal, any extra funds will go towards future school improvements.
Remember to share our campaign link to as many people as you can through Facebook, Twitter and email!

Our School
East Brisbane State School is located on Wellington Road, in the inner city suburb of East Brisbane. We are a small school, with 221 students aged 4 – 12, and a total of 27 teachers and teacher aides.
Our school motto is 'Diversity, Diligence and Distinction'.
We have developed a strong culture of respect, showing appreciation for the richness of the diversity within our small school community. Underpinned by the practices of philosophy, our rigorous curriculum and expert teaching provides students with opportunities to develop deep thinking and reflective practice while developing a love of lifelong learning. All members of our school community take responsibility for student learning and have high expectations for teaching, learning and behaviour. Our community is proud of the school’s strong local heritage and the role it plays in providing opportunities for students to excel.

Is air conditioning really needed?
Yes! And here are some reasons why:
1. With studies (see links below) showing that reading comprehension starts to diminish at 28 degrees (and some of our rooms get to 40 degrees on bad days); and studies showing that extreme temperatures and prolonged periods of heat have negative effects on a persons ability to pay attention, focus, retain information, and most importantly learn – it is safe to say that without air conditioning, students and teachers have a much harder time doing what they need to.
2. Young children are more prone to heat stress and dehydration than adults. Especially after physical education lessons or running around during lunch breaks. This heat stress (combined with how hard it is to make sure children drink enough water each day) can cause headaches, blurred vision and create lethargy which air conditioning could combat.
3. The heat can and does affect some of our students with skin conditions.
4. With air conditioning, teachers would be able to close windows and doors, severely reducing the noise pollution from outside - which can make learning and listening more difficult in classrooms. Especially in our busy location next to the Gabba stadium on game days.
5. School lunches are currently stored in the students bags on the port racks outside in the heat. Air conditioning would support the safe storage of student lunches as the bags could be stored in the classrooms.
6. The right environment, including temperature, will contribute positively to a learning environment. During hot days, kids will be eager to get back into an air conditioned classroom after being outside during lunch and recess.
“I went through school without air conditioning and I was fine” –
There are numerous studies and endless news articles showing that temperatures in Australia and across the globe are rising every year (see links below). How many times have you seen the headline: ‘Hottest day on record’? Things are not the same as when you went through school anymore. Plus, you may have made it through, but was it enjoyable? Could you have focused better and achieved more had your brain being cool enough to concentrate?
“Kids don’t feel the heat” –
Besides evidence to the contrary, think then of the teachers, school staff, parents, and volunteers. They all definitely DO feel the heat. All while trying to look after and teach hundreds of children, every day.
But don’t just take our word for it. Here are just some of the studies and articles about the things we are talking about:
National Centers for Environmental Information -
Global temperature analysis 2015
ABC article -
Record heat and its effects on health
The Conversation article -
Record heat and the exacerbating effects of humidity
Sunshine Coast Daily article -
