My name is Emma Kilroy, and I am finishing my freshman year at Fordham University. This summer, I have been fortunate enough to have been selected to travel to Johannesburg, South Africa from May 18th to the 31st with Global Outreach (GO!). GO! is a program at Fordham that sends teams of students of social justice and immersion projects both in the United States and around the world. The goal of this program is to help students learn about issues of poverty and injustice that plague our society, and to foster solidarity between the Fordham and global communities.
In preparation for this trip my team and I have been researching and discussing issues that have affected and currently affect South Africa, such as the apartheid movement, HIV/AIDS, extreme poverty, and corrupt government. In Johannesburg this summer we will get a chance to experience firsthand the way that these issues interact with one another and impact the daily lives of South Africans. I will be participating in homestays in townships around the city, volunteering at youth centers that serve children in extreme poverty, visiting AIDS clinics and care centers, and rebuilding some of the homes in the townships. My team will also be speaking with representatives of NGOs working to remedy these issues in Johannesburg, and we will gain a greater understanding of the community's struggles by visiting places such as Nelson Mandela's house, the Apartheid Museum, and the streets of Soweto. It will be a lot to take in, and a lot of hard work! I'm excited to learn from a different culture and broaden my worldview"”South Africa will be the first stamp in my passport!
I am financially responsible for all expenses incurred during the project, including food, travel, accommodations, and building materials, and the estimated cost is $3,000. I need your help so that I can reach my goal AND reach out to a community across the globe!
