Help Eliot Arts make Hairspray Jr GREAT
Donation protected
Eliot Arts Magnet Academy is raising funds for the Spring Musical of 2019: Hairspray Jr.
This is the 4th year of our musical productions at Eliot, a program that we continue to build and expand each year! (More about the history of Eliot Drama below). Students do everything in house--we design and make the costumes in our very own costume shop, we build and paint our sets, and we work tirelessly on stage to put on a great show.
For Hairspray Jr. we're studying the social and artistic movements of the 60s. Specifically, we're looking at intersections of segregation and the Civil Rights Movement, the Feminist Movement, and studying the pop art of artists like Corita Kent, Idelle Weber, and Rosalyn Drexler. We will be using pop art and printing techniques in our costumes and sets, and students are digging into how this show set in 1962 is still relevant today.
To put on the show of our dreams, we're going to need your help. Your donation will support:
Costumes & Wigs
Sets & Rigging Materials
A sound technician for the show
Publicity
Programs
T-shirts
The beautiful thing about theater is that it's a community effort. It takes everyone, and your support is much appreciated! THANK YOU!
And don't forget to come see the show: May 9 & 10 at 6:30 pm and May 11 at 1:30 pm
More about Eliot Drama:
Eliot's 1st full production of a spring musical was the amazing Lion King Jr. in 2016. Our artist-in-residence: Denise Seider, the choir teacher: Ms. Sandy Franklin, the dance teacher: Ms. Amber Plummer, and the drama teacher: Ms. Stock, worked long hours to put on a visually stunning show. I, Ms. Micol Issa, joined the team in fall of 2016, and we produced High School Musical Jr. in spring 2017. The show was also a great success and students from all over campus continued to engage in the creative process, be it acting and singing, dancing, or design. Last year 2018, through grants from PEF, we were able to build our very own costume shop that allowed us to make truly unique costumes for Alice in Wonderland Jr. Inspired by the painted costumes of Chagall and the Bauhaus Movement, these costumes in conjunction with a hired sound team paid for by a grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts launched Eliot's musical into the spotlight. Check out the article written in the Pasadena Independent.
About Eliot:
Founded in 1931, Charles W. Eliot Middle School has been a public school serving 6th, 7th, and 8th graders (11-14 years old) in the Altadena and North Pasadena communities for over 80 years. In 2013, Eliot transitioned into an Arts Magnet Academy under a federal magnet grant. Before the magnet grant, Eliot did not offer choir, drama, or dance to its student body, but in the past 5 years under the Arts Magnet program, Eliot has established elective programs in each of these subjects. In addition, Eliot teachers connect traditional subjects with real-world experience using an arts-integrated approach; rather than teaching core classes in isolation, students learn math, science, social studies, and English through arts-infused demonstrations and performance tasks.
Approximately 86% of Eliot students qualify for free or reduced lunch, 14% are foster youth, many live with family members other than their parents, and the majority of students have little to no exposure to the arts when they come to us. We offer them a comprehensive arts program for free, which, given our student population, is not only necessary, but imperative.
As an innovative Arts Magnet school, Eliot provides music, dance, theater arts, and visual arts courses in state-of-the-art facilities such as our Mac lab and video-recording studio where students learn from professionals. We have 3 artists-in-residence who assist in arts integration and with all our school shows and performances. Our professional partners include: the Pasadena Educational Foundation, The Huntington Library, the Pasadena Playhouse, A Noise Within, The Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, Light Bringer Project, and Lineage Dance.
About Our Team:
My name is Micol Issa and I am the Drama teacher at Eliot and the director of the spring musical. I am part of a truly incredible team of artists who have helped transform Eliot into the arts school it is today. Our team consists of: Ms. Cassandra Franklin (choir), Ms. Amber Plummer (dance), Ms. Lory Tatoulian (artist-in-residence, drama), Ms. Denise Seider (artist-in-residence, visual art & ceramics), Ms. Liane Shih (artist-in-residence, digital art), Ms. Sydney Minckler (lighting), Ms. Courtney Scrabeck (parent volunteer, costume design), and of course, our fearless leaders Principal, Lori Touloumian and, Assistant Principal, Dr. Charel Bailey.
Together, we work to see our students THRIVE through the arts. We hope you'll support us so we can continue to break barriers for the kids of Pasadena and Altadena.
