Working on "I Am Elizabeth Smart" forever changed me.
In 2002, fourteen year-old Elizabeth Smart vanished from her bed in the middle of the night, her younger sister asleep beside her. The search for Elizabeth captivated the nation, and her rescue nine months later stunned the world. The media frenzy surrounding her abduction fed the 24-hour news cycle for months, surpassed only by her statistically miraculous rescue.
Elizabeth Smart orchestrated her own escape. After 9 months of daily rape and abuse, she returned to her family and has never looked back. Her experience inspired a relentless commitment to giving hope, empowerment, resources and a voice to families and victims of predatory crimes against children.
Elizabeth serves as narrator and producer on the film, and it was an honor to be entrusted with telling her story. It was life changing to experience first hand the resilience and strength of this woman. She is an unparralled inspiration to millions of people around the world.
To commemorate the premiere of Lifetime's "I am Elizabeth Smart", please join me in supporting The Elizabeth Smart Foundation. Founded in 2011 and partnering with organizations and powerful actors to create a safer world for everyone.
The foundation most recently instituted SmartTalks at campuses across the country. SmartTalks is a forum to discuss the devastating effects of sexual trauma, what to look for and where to turn.
Your donations will help promote and support these initiatives as well as outreach and education, aiding Elizabeth in advocacy on a variety of fronts. No amount is too small or too large.
Her testimony pushed the Amber Alert legislation through congress (Please make sure it is enabled on your phone!) . Elizabeth helped pass a Utah Sex Abuse Bill which enables better education for families, and the Rapid DNA Testing Bill which produces lab results for sex crimes cases in 90 minutes instead of weeks, enables law enforcement to clear the innocent and confirm crucial suspects more quickly .
I know you will be moved by the film about this remarkable woman. I hope you will be moved to donate to her fierce and tireless work to help others. I hope you will pass this along to anyone who may want to help combat sexual predators in a tangible, meaningful way.
"I Am Elizabeth Smart" premieres November 18th on Lifetime 9/8pm, with Skeet Ulrich, Deirdre Lovejoy (that's me) and Alana Boden. Sarah Walker directs.
