| 3 min read Charity

Pieta is an Irish charity that offers a free service to people who are experiencing suicidal ideation, people who have attempted suicide and people who are engaging in self-harm.

Qualified staff offer therapeutic, free, care to those who seek it and one-on-one sessions.

Its main pillars of practice are prevention, intervention, and postvention as it works to help those in-need.

About the charity

The charity was founded in Dublin, in 2006. Since then it has gone on to operate in 20 locations across Ireland.

Since its inception, it’s gone on to help more than 60,000 people across the country. As well as helping people with suicidal ideations, it also helps people in bereavement.

The charity works by using ‘The Pieta Way,’ which is a therapy model focusing on identifying and building resources and protective factors for the client.

Pieta House charity projects

Pieta operates through different charity projects and has different approaches to supporting those who are in need.

Free 24 hour support

Pieta House operates a free 24-hour helpline to support people who are in suicidal distress or engaging in self-harm. By calling the number, those in need can speak to a qualified therapist and access free therapy sessions on an ongoing basis.

Resilience Academy

The Resilience Academy offers programmes for secondary school students aimed at equipping them with emotional resilience tools.

Skills training programmes aim to increase protective factors such as coping skills, problem solving, decision making, and cognitive skills.

How the charity uses donations

Pieta House’s services are 80% funded by donations from the public – and your donation could go a long way.

Its annual report  Pieta revealed it delivered over 48,000 hours of intervention and bereavement counselling and were able to do so because of donations.

According to the charity’s website, € 24 helps therapists answer two more calls on its 24/7 crisis Helpline, € 45 funds a safety planning session between scheduled counselling sessions and €1000 provides an entire programme of counselling services for one person with suicidal ideation.
