A daughter's plea:Help Dad Get Well

Please help my daddy get a new kidney and a new throat. He’s my hero!

My name is Morgan, and I’m in kindergarten. My daddy is very sick. He had to go to the hospital last year and didn’t wake up for two and half weeks. While he was sleeping, they found out his PKD (polycystic kidney disease) was really bad. My kidneys and yours are the size our fists. His kidneys are bigger than footballs and weigh about 30 pounds each! That’s huge! He’ll probably break the Guiness World Book of Records when they’re taken out.

They’re going bad really fast. They were working at 92% when he was in the hospital a year ago. When his doctor tested them a couple months ago, they were already down to 50%. They say it won’t be long before he’s on dialysis.

It’s not good for his kidneys to be that big. They are pushing on his lungs so hard, one has already collapsed. They hurt him a lot and once every month or two, one of the cysts pops, and he says it hurts really bad. Mom says he shouldn’t get out of bed when that happens, but he still does. He still goes to work every day. He still plays Candyland and Go Fish with me no matter how bad he hurts. If he can’t sit up, we snuggle and read my favorite books.

Now his kidneys are so big, they broke his esophagus. That’s the tube that takes your food from your mouth to your stomach. His doesn’t work any more so he drinks a lot of chocolate milk stuff he calls Ensure. It doesn’t taste too bad to me, but he says he would rather eat real food. He tries sometimes, but it makes him throw up when he does. His surgeon says they can take out the broken tube and replace it with a piece of his colon so he can eat again. But they said he has to go to a special hospital called Mayo to do it. That’s really far away in Minnesota. Mom said it takes a couple days to get there and they’ll have to be gone a long time.

He was supposed to go on November 2, but the company he worked for for four years laid him off in September. Now we don’t have insurance so none of us can go to the doctor. Mommy and Daddy said we’ll sell our house and move to a smaller one until things get better. I don’t really want to move because I like my bedroom and my school. My teacher is the smartest and she’s makes me laugh. I tried to give Mommy the money out of my piggy bank for groceries last week and I helped her make a grocery list since I’m learning to spell.

Daddy is starting a new job, but it’s in a different state and we won’t have insurance for 4 more months. I’ll really miss him when he’s gone for work, and I’m so sad he’s sick. Mommy is really sad, too. She doesn’t like the idea of him being so far away and alone when he doesn’t feel good. I’m going to send Jumper with him. He’s my favorite stuffed animal. I know Jumper will take good care of Daddy when he‘s gone and keep him from getting lonely.

Every night I say a prayer to God. I thank him for my family and friends and our home and food to eat, I tell him I’m sorry when I do something I shouldn’t, and I ask him to help Daddy get well soon. Every single night.

Mommy says God will take care of us, and He always hears my prayers. Mommy prays a lot, too. Mommy says the more prayers we get, the better it will be. Can you say a prayer for us, too? Pretty please?

The Earl Family’s medical bills are near $5,000 now plus the thousands that have been charged to their credit cards during and since Jason’s month long stay at the hospital about a year ago. Jason’s medication and other medical supplies are over $600 per month without insurance. If you feel compelled to donate, please know the money will be put to good use whether it’s buying his prescriptions, paying utilities and medical bills, purchasing groceries, or saving for the urgent esophagectomy and looming dialysis and kidney transplant.

Many thanks to Michael Overall, Ashley Parrish, Cory Young, and all the wonderful folks at Tulsa World for the beautiful story they did on Jason just days before his 37th birthday.

You can read it here: http://www.tulsaworld.com/homepagelatest/owasso-man-might-qualify-for-guinness-record-book-but-not/article_3c2bc046-2981-519b-a9bd-bacee4879e39.html

Although it is hard to imagine the day to day struggles Jason faces and the pain he feels, the story did capture one characteristic of Jason that anyone who has ever met him, even if just briefly, knows. His outlook on life is beautiful. He is so caring and compassionate, always putting others before himself. His positive attitude prevails despite the medical tragedy he is enduring. And his faith in God is unbreakable.
