I just returned from dropping off a check for $1,055 at the Unit 4 Food Services office. Thank you all so much for your incredible generosity, and for sharing this campaign with others. Southside Elementary launched a similar effort and surpassed our goal, which is awesome!
The donations are a great outcome themselves, but this campaign has also sparked a conversation in our community about how we can do more to permanently solve this issue.

The Need:
Nearly 40% of families with children attending Carrie Busey qualify as low-income according to the Illinois School Report Card.
Even though many of these students qualify to receive free or reduced meals at school there are still significant lunch debt balances. It may be that a family did not submit an application. Perhaps they accumulated a balance prior to receiving assistance. Or it's possible the family income is just above the level to qualify.
As of April 5, 2018, the outstanding lunch debt at Carrie Busey was $821.23.
The Goal:
We want to completely pay off the outstanding lunch debt at Carrie Busey.
If there are additional funds available then we would like to use them to pay off balances for other families in the Unit 4 school district.
How Funds Are Allocated:
If we do not reach our goal here is how Unit 4 will allocate the funds.
1. Money applied to balances of students who are now eligible for free meals, but have an existing balance. The USDA doesn't allow schools districts to wipe charges if students apply for meal benefits at a later date. Charges incurred prior to the meal application being on file remain on the student's account.
2. If money remains it would be applied to any balances of reduced meal students.
3. Finally if any money remains it would be applied to students who have a balance, but have not submitted a meal application or have been denied meal benefits based upon the income on the meal application.
