Support Naturopathic Medicine in Virginia!
Are you aware of the role medically-trained naturopathic doctors currently play in the health care system?
• NDs are able to order labs in all 25 jurisdictions that provide regulation or licensure
• We can prescribe necessary medications in 13 states
• NDs are recognized as primary care providers in 12 states, and are even credentialed by health insurance companies in 7 states
Did you know that we are currently unable to offer any of these health care staples, in Virginia?
This limits a naturopathic doctor’s ability to best serve their patients, AND it limits your access to naturopathic medicine in the Commonwealth.
Many medically-trained naturopathic doctors don’t even practice in Virginia because they are so limited without a license. This needs to change - the VAANP is spearheading a fast growing and powerful movement to get NDs quickly licensed in Virginia.
In August, the Board of Health Professions conducted a study on our profession and held a public hearing to make a determination as to whether or not to recommend licensure. NDs, associations, student groups and patients quickly mobilized on our behalf. When the public comment period ended, over 170 comments had been submitted in support of licensure, included 99 from patients -- an overwhelming rise of support for our movement!
Virginia Board of Health Professions unanimously determined that naturopathic doctors met all seven criteria for regulation and recommended licensing. Unfortunately, the full board (which is under heavy influence by the medical society of Virginia) vote 6-5 against the recommendation.
The VAANP remains optimistic, with renewed determination to continue forward on our path towards increasing patient’s safe access to naturopathic medicine in Virginia. This is the most support we have had since or inception in 2005.
Next steps: The VAANP will be working closely with our bill patrons and legislative consultant. Now, more than ever, patients need access to naturopathic medicine. The global coronavirus pandemic has further highlighted this need in the Commonwealth. Medically-trained NDs are experts in prevention, and we are well poised to fill the current gap in provider shortages and to assist with the chronic disease crisis.
