1,000 Coral Baskets Reef Rehabilitation Program
Donation protected
Wainlikeli-Bouma Reefs, Taveuni and Qamea Islands, Fiji
Civa Fiji Pearls, Matagi Island Resort and the Traditional Custodians of the customary fishing rights of the Wainlikeli-Bouma waters have come together to successfully launch a coral reef rehabilitation program, aiming at growing and regenerating the coral reefs and preserving and increasing the marine life around the islands of Qamea and Taveuni, in Northern Fiji.
With the assistance of coral experts, the program aims to deploy no less than 1,000 coral frames and baskets to achieve this goal.
The deployment of coral frames and coral baskets is a proven technique that increases coral colonies in depleted sectors of the reef, and creates new housing and shelter for marine life. The Maldives has been using this system for many years with great success, and here in Fiji we have a great opportunity in implementing this system due to the constant supply of coral seedlings from the Civa Pearl farm and the technical knowledge of Matagi Island Resort to build the coral frames, which are then populated with coral seedlings and deployed in strategic reef depleted locations in the Wainikeli-Bouma waters.
The program has already featured on FBC News, and we need your help to assist with the funding of the baskets to continue and reach our goal of 1,000 baskets.
The construction of a single basket costs about $50 FJD (around $32 AUD or $23 USD) and your donation would be immensely appreciated by the local Traditional Custodians which rely on these reefs as their source of food and survival.
On behalf of the people from the Villages of the Wainikeli-Bouma district, thank you very much for your support!
