12-HOUR DJ SET TO RAISE FUNDS FOR REFUGEES

On Saturday 19th December 2020, I will be DJing from 11:59 am until 11:59 pm to raise funds for Safety4Sisters, RAPAR and African Rainbow Family. These organisations serve as hubs that offer refugees and asylum seekers with mental and emotional support and advice about the UK's confusing immigration system, whilst campaigning for their right to safely reside in this country.

2020 has been a difficult year for refugees and asylum seekers. From sensationalist headlines about crossing borders to racist protests in places where they are seeking shelter, this year has solidified the fact that our government does not care about their lives.

The coronavirus pandemic has added an additional issue to the precarious situations refugees and asylum seekers are in. While many of us have been able to seek financial support through Universal Credit and the furlough scheme, refugees and asylum seekers have been unable to access work or public funds to support them during these difficult times. This is not something that is new; it has been happening for years and voluntary organisations have had to put in the work to offer provisions because of government failure.

My aim is to raise £1500 and split it between Safety4Sisters, RAPAR and African Rainbow Family. I hope that this money can help these organisations continue their vital work. I also hope that my DJ set can bring a slither of joy in this otherwise gloomy year.

Any recommendations for comfortable shoes would be much appreciated!


Information about the organisations

Safety4Sisters is a Manchester-based organisation that fights for the human rights of migrant women experiencing gender-based violence. It was established in 2009 to address the exclusion of migrant women (particularly those with no recourse to public funds) from the most basic rights of safety and protection. Safety4Sisters works towards this through their policy work, through educating and challenging organisations and the public, and through the creation of spaces in which the individual experiences of migrant women can be transformed into collective stories and action. >> https://www.safety4sisters.org/

RAPAR (Refugee and Asylum Participatory Action Research) is a Manchester-based Human Rights Organisation which is primarily concerned with displaced people and issues relating to displaced people. It is comprised of academics, researchers, displaced people, second/third generation migrants and practitioners. RAPAR functions as an enabler with displaced people, a campaigning focal point, a community development facilitator and a participatory action research producer. >> http://www.rapar.co.uk/

African Rainbow Family (ARF) is a non-profit charitable organisation that supports LGBTQIA+ people of African heritage and BAME backgrounds. It was established in 2014 by a lesbian in the wake of toxic and draconian anti-gay laws, persecutions and environments in some African countries which seek to criminalise LGBTQIA people for existing. ARF provides support for LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers and campaigns for equality.  >> https://africanrainbowfamily.org/
