13 year old Tinaye Njanjari’s heart assist device

Hi, my name is Beauty Zindi and I am raising money for my friends' son Tinaye who urgently needs heart treatment. I have known Jasper Njanjari and Etina Chapwanya (Tinaye's parents) for nearly 23 years. The reason I am raising the money on their behalf is because they live in Zimbabwe and gofundme does not send funds to that country. I have lived and worked in the United Kingdom for nearly 20 years.

It’s every parent’s nightmare – to hear that your child has stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This is what we were faced with in 2017 when Tinaye was only 8 years old. After 6 months of chemotherapy the cancer was successfully treated. In 2018 he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. However he was able to live a normal life … until 2022 when he became unwell again. He now has stage 4 heart failure.

The Zimbabwean doctors who were treating him recommended that we find specialist treatment for him. After exploring several options, including in neighbouring South Africa the best place we found for him turned out to be India.

With the help of friends and family we were able to raise USD14,000 to travel to Hyderabad in India for consultation at Star Hospitals and then at KIMS hospitals. The medical team at KIMS has recommended that Tinaye urgently needs Left Ventricular Assist Device treatment while he awaits a heart transplant.

Tinaye is a very happy child who has been dealt a bad hand by life. Despite all the challenges he has faced, he remains positive and hopeful. Since he became unwell in July 2022 he has not been able to go to school. He misses learning and he misses his friends. He loves playing chess, watching documentaries and playing games that involve flying aeroplanes. His ambition is to become an aircraft engineer. Tinaye attained 9 units in his grade 7 examinations (end of primary school). This was a very good achievement and he is looking forward to returning to Zimbabwe to embark start form 1 (secondary school).

When he was healthy he took his role as the eldest child in the family seriously – always helping his younger sisters with heavy tasks. Being ill has meant that he can’t do this anymore.

Tinaye’s only chance to live a healthy life depends on this treatment. Without it he will live in constant pain and his health will continue to deteriorate.
