"1book1world" Michigan Asian American book drive

Tax deductible
Donating Asian books to Michigan Public Schools

Asian Americans have long played a vital and complex role in American history. Yet, our stories and contributions are largely overlooked in the history taught in America’s K-12 schools, reduced to a footnote about building railroads or Japanese internment. The first step toward remedying this injustice, which diminishes public knowledge of Asian Americans’ important contributions to our nation, is to provide schools with books that tell the Asian American story - a story that goes far beyond a sentence or two about the railroads.

Inspired by the "one book one world" project initiated by three non-for-profit Chinese American organizations in Chicago, our Michigan community leaders and volunteers launch an initiative to bring Asian books to K-12 public schools. These books were screened by children’s book publishers, public school teachers, and Asian American History teachers. The wide range of selection is for all grades (17 titles for elementary school, 8 titles for middle school, and 8 titles for high school) that highlight love, heritage, sharing, and youth development.

As part of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May, we are raising money to provide books about the Asian American experience and our history to grade schools throughout Michigan, giving students and teachers the information and resources that will allow these stories to be told. Your donation will go directly toward purchasing these books for Michigan public schools, teaching the next generation about the complex and vital role of Asian Americans in American history.

We will contact schools in the greater Detroit areas (Troy/Northville/Hamtramck/Rochester/Ann Arbor/Novi/Canton) with a large representation of Asian Americans. The initial fundraising goal is $20,000 for purchasing over 1,000 books. Any additional funding will go towards more public schools in Michigan. We will also launch an online and offline reading program to read these books together and promote the understanding of Asian American history and culture and their contributions to our communities and country.
