DETROIT, MI: 52 year-old music and arts writer/editor Mike McGonigal has had better weeks.
WHAT: On Monday, March 8, he was admitted to Ascension-Macomb Hospital in Madison Hts., MI for heart failure, kidney failure and other complications. The top half of the heart was boinging arrhythmically at over twice usual speed while the bottom ventricles pushed back at twenty percent. A stroke on Monday and fluid on the brain on Tuesday were narrowly avoided. Wednesday saw potassium levels all over the place. Thus far, treatments have been with meds.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING: No idea yet, which is why today, Thursday March 11, we move to larger Henry Ford complex in Detroit.
WHO: McGonigal has overseen dozens of CD and LP reissues and compilations (chiefly gospel titles like Fire in My Bones, Noah Found Grace, and Life is a Problem). He’s written books on My Bloody Valentine and Galaxie 500 and edited three separate fanzines which he started himself: Chemical Imbalance, Yeti, and Maggot Brain (https://thirdmanstore.com/products/maggot-brain).
NEXT: There is a lot to do even if things go extremely well and smoothly. Either a surgery or transplant is very likely. McGonigal is partly self-employed via Third Man Records (who back Maggot Brain). He does have private insurance but deductibles are high.
PLEASE HELP: if you can! More concrete numbers and actual bills will be posted here very soon, including obviously updates on care, etc. This is not going to be cheap. Every bit helps but also we’re all so fucked for funds right now I don’t expect anything.
Love you—
Mike McGonigal
