My husband, Victor, a 39 year old father of 2 has two failed organs. A kidney and a pancreas. His daily struggle is balancing his blood sugars and poking himself with a needle about 3-4 times a day along with trying get rid of the toxins from his body. For these two failed organs there is no cure. He has been living with diabetes for 25 years and has been living with kidney failure for 2 years. He has to be hooked up to a dialysis machine every night for 8-10 hours to remove the toxins from his body manually where as we as normal people can urinate it out. Dialysis takes him out of the red zone and puts him into an amber state so that he can function somewhat normally. Imagine a young man who looks normal and healthy walking up a flight of stairs and getting tired after going up 3 steps to catch his breath. The kidneys not only omit the toxins from your body, but also help filter the blood back to the heart. They help to maintain overall fluid balance, regulates and filters the minerals (potassium and phosphates), filters wastes from medication, food, and toxic substances. They also help with creating hormones that produce red blood cells, promote bone health and regulate blood pressure. Since 2016, Victor has undergone 8 surgeries one that almost cost him his life and another that left him permanently blind in his left eye. Victor is required to take multiple medications which are not covered by OHIP and adds up to $400 monthly. In 2016, Victor stopped working at that time we lost our health benefits and we have had limited support through government financial program assistance which has put an enormous financial strain on our family these past few years. As a nurse, I pick up shifts where I can while trying to balance caring for Victor, managing a household and raising our 2 beautiful children. Surviving off a single income to pay for medications, food, bills and raising two growing kids has been very challenging these past few years and now it’s taken a turn for the worse that unfortunately we are forced to sell our home to make ends meet. This has been a very difficult decision as it effects not just Victor and I, but our children as this is their home. Victor has been on a waitlist for a kidney for the past 2 years and has approximately another 2 years to wait. Victor’s health continues to decline and within 2 years could have a significant impact. We have explored other options and have reached out to family, friends and the public to find a donor match. We were born with two kidneys in which we can survive off of one, which means we all carry a spare. Victor is living with two non working kidneys. We were given hope when a donor came forward but just as quick as the hope came, it left as the donor was not able to financially take 4-6 weeks off work to recover from the surgery. We need your help to assist in alleviating some of the financial burden to cover medications and to offer financial compensation to potential donors to cover their recovery time off work. Victor’s health continues to decline and being able to offer financial security to a donor improves his chances of getting a new kidney sooner than 2 years. Please help Victor in his fight to save his life so that he can be a father to his kids. The goal of this GoFundMe is to help generate funds to offer financial security to a donor and to assist in covering essential medications. Any and all donations is deeply appreciated by the Tai family. If you know a donor that is O positive or negative please let us know, they could help save Victor’s life! Please share this post with your friends and family in hopes of getting Victor a cure.
