Volunteer Midwife in Senegal
Greetings friends and family!
As many of you know, I have been studying the practice of Midwifery for about 3 years. As my graduation grows ever near, I am broadening my experience portfolio. I am planning a volunteer trip to Senegal, West Africa and am humbly asking for your help. I will be spending one month, February 15th through March 15th, volunteering at a Birth Clinic. The cost of tuition and flights are quite substantial!
The situation in Senegal can be considered pretty grim. 65% of women give birth unattended by a skilled health care professional. 85% of women live 45 minutes from a Health Care Center. The majority of attend births are overseen by midwives with a very limited education. Click here for more info about the state of maternity care in Senegal and about the group I will be traveling with: http://www.africanbirthcollective.org/html/InSenegal.html
I know times are tough. Trust me, as I currently hold an unpaid post as an apprentice, I know. Please, help if you can. Allow me to learn and sharpen my skills as a midwife and to assist in making the Maternity Care System better on a global level.
I thank you.
With love and respect,
Steph
