From Conner Morgan: Tom Goode is my uncle. He’s a man with a dashing beard, a faithful heart, a love for Gilbert & Sullivan, and a really stellar classical record collection. He's fabulously funny and wonderfully kind, and he loves my aunt Jane and cousin Tory more than anything.
Tom also has brain cancer. When his health began to deteriorate last February, doctors struggled to determine the cause. After living through an ever-worsening series of seizures, he was ultimately diagnosed with cancer, and underwent surgery to remove the tumor, a Grade IV Glioblastoma, on November 5th. And a few days later, my grandmother Emma, Jane’s mom, passed away after a long illness.
Unfortunately, Tom has been left with such severe deficits after his surgery that Jane has made the difficult decision to forego further cancer treatment and enter him into a hospice facility.
While it will be a relief to have Tom out of the hospital, this brings an entire other set of concerns to bear, most of which have to do with the parts of his future care that may not be covered by insurance and, ultimately, his funeral.
People in Tom and Jane's network of friends and family have asked about ways to help out. It is difficult to predict what will be needed, but Jane will be posting information on Tom’s CaringBridge website as it becomes known. This will include specific ways to help, like visits or food. Others have expressed the desire to make a contribution of a financial nature, so I’ve set up this GoFundMe.
Jane has already had to take care of many out-of-pocket expenses for Tom's care, from insurance deductibles and copays to the parking fees due each day when she visits Tom in Georgetown Hospital, and she is facing more in the future. Funds from the campaign will contribute to Tom's ongoing care and/or his funeral expenses.
I'm setting the goal of this campaign at $7,000. To give you an idea of what Jane might be facing, funeral expenses start at $5,000. Jane has a full-time job and has no paid leave left. She is working part-time now and will want to spend more time with Tom as each day becomes more precious. Should he come home, she will need to employ a full-time certified custodial care provider, which is not covered by medical insurance. If we are lucky enough to have Tom survive into 2020, the new year will bring more insurance deductibles, copays, and other expenses.
Tom and Jane are incredible, dynamic people. If you’re here, you either know what a joy it is to have them in your life, or you know someone who does. Maybe you’ve worked a cryptic crossword with Tom, noshed on Jane’s hors d'oeuvres, watched Tom do the Thriller dance dressed as an eighteenth century ghost, or remember that time Jane shaved Tom’s beard off and he sported those enormous sideburns. Maybe you know they are the best people in the whole world, and they don’t deserve what has happened. Nobody does.
All help is sincerely appreciated, and we hope you will contribute in whatever way you feel comfortable and appropriate, including keeping them both in your thoughts and prayers for the days to come. Well-wishes, remembrances and jokes we can tell Tom are great contributions on Tom's CaringBridge website, where you can also keep up-to-date with Jane's blog. It is a private site, but you are encouraged to request permission to visit or follow here . All friends and family are welcome.
