Malawi 2020: Charity Eye Trip

This summer, myself and 11 other Cardiff University Optometry students will be travelling to Malawi to provide free eye examinations for over 3,000 people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to eye health services. In Malawi there are only 34 optometrists to a population of 18 million, meaning that while we are there, our team will make up a quarter of the eye care specialists in the country. During our trip not only will we be supplying free spectacles, we will also be checking the health of the eyes and identifying ocular conditions. With the help of donations we hope to refer people for life changing cataract surgeries. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness however most people in Malawi do not have access to treatment. Donations will contribute to purchasing spectacles to those who need them as well as towards surgeries and teaching equipment. Any donation - including old glasses or sunglasses will make a life changing difference and would be greatly appreciated no matter how big or small. Thank you so much!
