Urgent medical needs of unwanted pets

Hi there! I’m reaching out on behalf of the critters temporarily residing in Andy’s Adoption Center. So far this year... the number of pets surrendered has been much higher than in the past. Most likely due to lack of specialty rescues available for small animals, reptiles, and fish (yes, we even take in fish) With the many babies, pregnant, injured and sick animals taken in directly from their owners, left on our doorstep, or from shelters that don’t have room or capability to care for that species... there are always medical issues. Most times we can handle it in house... a little ointment, some oral or injectable medicine... No problem. This year we already have a number of animals that need much more than we can do for them on our own. Today, I’ll give you an example... Benny is a sweet older gentleman at 5 years of age. 1 of 7 guinnea pigs we said we would take that day from an east bay shelter that’s not equipped to house guinnea pigs. Benny and his partner were accompanied by a family of 5 (they are another story) We saw Benny’s eye and realized was more than an old scratch like we thought. His left eye is actually protruding with what appears to be glaucoma and a fallen lense. Although he is calm and seeks attention- he’s got to be very uncomfortable to say the least! We are seeking care for him at a vet that will remove his eye and relieve his pain. Exotics vets can be expensive and hard to find- speciality exotics vets are harder to find and more expensive. With an office visit costing just under $100 and several of these special cases in our care now, the bills could be in the thousands on top of their day to day maintenance We are quickly getting overwhelmed. If you could find it in your heart to give these lil guys the gift of good heath and care while they wait for their forever homes- we would all be so thankful ❤️ z~
