Zac’s Fight Against GBS

This is my nephew Zachary Carrella. He is a handsome, smart, loving almost 4 year old boy! He has an almost 1-year-old sister and 2 loving parents, Lisa and Chris. Zachary was an active, happy, 3-year-old boy one day, and the next day, he was having difficulty walking.  Within a few days, he was unable to walk at all.  Zachary ended up being hospitalized and was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre' Syndrome.   Guillain-Barre' (gee-YAHN-buh-RAY) syndrome is a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves.  Weakness and tingling in the extremities are usually the first symptoms.  These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body.  Most people with the condition must be hospitalized to receive treatment.  There's no know cure for Guillain-Barre' Syndrome, but several treatments can ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness.   Imagine being in his parent's shoes...one day your little boy is happy, healthy, laughing and running around playing and the next day he is in pain, having difficulty walking and then cannot walk at all!  A parent's worst nightmare to say the least.  Zachary has been hospitalized for almost a week so far and is undergoing treatment. He is in a lot of pain and the medications that he is taking make him tired. This disease is also what makes him tired and very fatigued. Even minimal activity can cause him to become winded. As with this hardship, also comes the hardship of a financial burden. Unfortunately, insurance isn’t going to cover all of the extensive testing, long stays at hospitals, and the physical therapy treatments to come. So many people have asked what they can do to help my sister and brother in law get through this nightmare, so I thought organizing a donation account would be best for them. Anything will help, and I know Lisa and Chris are truly grateful for all of your prayers and support during the most difficult time of their lives.
