20 Bridges of New York Solo Swim Move4Parkinson

Hi, my name is Barry Murphy ( aka Channel Splasher ) and I am a Channel Swimmer. I am currently preparing to embark on my final major swim challenge of the year. On the 26th September, I am travelling to New York to swim the 20 Bridges of Manhattan. This is an iconic swim totalling over 48km around the island of Manhattan. Over the last few years I have completed the English Channel, The North Channel, the Bristol Channel, Fastnet Lighthouse to Baltimore, Galway Bay and a number of other marathon swims. In long distance swimming terms I have achieved the Irish Triple Crown and the Original Triple Crown. In taking on the NYC 20 Bridges challenge I am looking for your support to raise some much needed funds for an Irish registered charity called Move4Parkinsons. ( See (www.move4parkinsons.ie ).

Anyone who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's or has family or friends suffering with Parkinson's will understand the need to support organisations like Move4Parkinsons. This organisation provides support, education and knowledge which can be effectively shared with people suffering with this disease. Any amount you donate ( no matter how small ) will go directly to the charity. I want to reassure everyone that I have funded all my swims, including this one, with my own resources.

About Move4Parkinson's

Move4Parkinson’s
‘Educate, Empower and Inspire’

Move4Parkinson’s was established in November 2011 by Margaret Mullarney who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2004 aged 47. Following her diagnosis and through her own research Margaret discovered that there is a huge range of activities that People with Parkinson’s can undertake to improve their quality of life.

Move4Parkinson’s have a vision of a world in which People with Parkinson's are empowered to achieve their best possible quality of life. When diagnosed with Parkinson's it feels very lonely and there is a great sense of being powerless for all concerned as there is no cure for this disease at the moment. With this in mind, Move4Parkinson's provide information and support to individuals and their families on ways to improve your symptoms, take some control back into your life through self-management and possibly slow down the impact of the disease. Every case is different and there are no guarantees but empowering people with Parkinson's diagnosis will enable each of them to live their best life possible.

Move4Parkinson’s offer research based weekly activities include Choirs, Set and Creative Dance, Yoga, Mindfulness, Physio based exercise classes and Support Groups.

We aim to serve the families and carers of People with Parkinson’s and build a community of support for everyone affected by this disease.
