2020 Hoby World Leadership Congress Trip
Donation protected
Hello and welcome to my GoFundMe page,
I am a Junior at the Steamboat Springs High School. After attending a life-changing Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership seminar this past summer, I am incredibly pleased to be attending the World Leadership Congress (WLC) in efforts to advance and further hone my skills as a leader in our community and this world, and I am writing to ask for financial support.
Hugh O’Brian, television’s legendary Wyatt Earp, developed the Hoby program in 1958 for high school sophomores following a nine-day experience in Africa with humanitarian Albert Schweitzer. This program teaches and inspires young people to think critically for themselves and to appreciate a life dedicated to service and social change. I currently have the unique opportunity to attend the World Leadership Congress, a Hoby program aimed at high school students ages 15-17. I will be exposed to in-depth leadership theories, develop a blueprint for a service project that I would like to complete, and gain real-world experience from knowledgable professionals in making my goals a reality.
During my sophomore year at Steamboat Springs High School, I was elected to the Sailor Senate. The Sailor Senate is the student-led political body of the schools’ student council. My oldest sister was involved in Student Council all through her middle school and high school career which provided her with many opportunities to be involved in the leadership decision-making process within her school as well as visit interesting places and build friendships with many unique talented people. I was always jealous and amazed at what she accomplished and I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to sit on the student council as a middle school student so when this opportunity became available in my sophomore year of high school I was excited and determined to become the sophomore senator. I had to go through a small application process that allowed me to talk about my leadership skills and what I believe makes an outstanding leader. My vision and self-confidence resonated with the administration allowing me to be selected as the sophomore senator. With this opportunity came more opportunities like Hoby. My school sent me to the 2019 Hoby seminar at Denver University and fully sponsored it. It was a truly inspiring experience where I learned a multitude of leadership strategies which made me hungry for more, which lead me to the next step, the World Leadership Congress.
At the Hoby Seminar, we were divided into small groups of about twelve people enabling us to build relationships and share perspectives of how we believe we can change the world for the better. A continual reoccurring theme in my group was school shootings. School shootings along with mass shootings/killings are a perpetual problem in this world with no solution or lessening frequency. I left Hoby with a plan that I believe will help to solve this problem, but I cannot do it by myself. I have started small by joining clubs in my school, volunteering throughout my community, and reaching out to organizations with the same goal as me. Thus far most of my volunteering has taken place at a local elementary school helping to teach kindergarten physical education and fifth-grade students who struggle academically in the classroom. Building relationships with the youth and being a role model that they are able to look up to is an important first step in trying to make kids feel like they always have someone to talk to when they are questioning their self-worth.
I am responsible for a $1800.00 program fee and approximately $200.00 in airfare. I am seeking your financial sponsorship in any amount to assist me in getting to the World Leadership Congress. No donation is too small; and will not only assist me in attending the program but will jumpstart my efforts in making sure that students and adults alike in our world are not leaving their homes worried about being killed on any given day by a mass shooting. Your donation can make an impact on me now, and my community in the future.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of sponsorship. Below is a place for you to donate as well as a link that will allow you to share this page. In the meantime, please feel free to email or call me with any questions that you have. Thank you!
Sincerely,
James Lahrman
