2021 London marathon - Team Avi
Avi Solomon, his guide dog, Nike, his guide runner, Lior, Noach Braun, the CEO and Founder of the Israel Guide Dog Centre and Justine Zwerling, Head of Primary Markets, Israel, LSEG or all together, TEAM AVI are coming to London from Israel in October 2021.
They are on a special mission to tell people all about the amazing Israel Guide Dog Centre. Founded by Noach, in 1991, the Centre is celebrating its' 30th anniversary this year.
Avi Solomon was born blind but regained partial vision after an operation when he was 6 years old. He lost his vison, permanently this time, when he was 14. He decided to start running soon after that as he wanted to have a sport that depended on "only me" as he says.
Last year was a difficult year for everyone and Avi decided that he needed a guide dog to give him the independence he enjoyed when running with his guide Lior.
So he came to the Israel Guide Dog Centre, probably at the worst time ever, to ask us to provide him with a trained guide dog and to teach him to walk with it.
Of course, we said yes and today, Avi and his faithful guide dog, Nike, have been together for almost a year now.
Producing a trained guide dog takes lots of time and resources, it costs the Centre £36,000 for every trained guide dog and Avi decided that he wanted to help us to raise the much needed resources we need by running in the London marathon.
When we asked him why London, he said, "it is the most famous marathon in the world, that's the one I want to run for you!".
The Israel Guide Dog Centre has a waiting list of blind applicants in need of a guide dog now and we are committed to producing 35 new guide dog partnerships this year. (A 'partnership' is the matching of a blind person with a suitable guide dog).
Thanks to our partnerships with UK Guide Dogs we were able to secure him a place in the marathon on 3 October 2021. And thanks to the amazing support of our very good friend, Justine Zwerling, the team will be flying in to London the week before the marathon and meeting our supporters and friends there.
Avi and the team will also be the 'guests of honour' at our Annual Supporters Dinner on the day after the marathon.
And so 'Team Avi' are on their way to London!
We are extremely grateful to have been sponsored by Cryptex Security Solutions and the London Stock Exchange Group.
