2023 Tornado Relief: Outstanding Dumping Fees

The Situation:

Our community was hit hard by a tornado, significantly affecting 12 properties in Mountain View County. The Humphreys' property became a central hub for debris cleanup, filled by volunteers with debris from the surrounding area. While many costs were generously covered by local companies, the Humphreys are now, personally, facing a bill of $10,007 for landfill tipping fees.

Background:

Despite community volunteer fundraisers raising approximately $250,000 for affected families, the Humphreys had to use their entire share for rebuilding their home, which is underway with the help of volunteers. The Humphreys' were among the hardest hit, having lost everything, and unlike others, they didn’t have insurance coverage for such a disaster.

Our Goal:

We need to raise $10,007 to cover the landfill fees charged to the Humphreys. This cost is a result of using their property as a collection point during the cleanup. The fees are owed to two companies: Carstairs Waste, who has donated more than the amount of their tipping costs, and Empringham Disposal, who also donated a portion of their costs.

Other Efforts Made:

In addition to launching this fundraiser, we have actively sought other avenues to alleviate the financial burden on the Humphreys. We approached both the Mountain View County office and the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission for assistance. Unfortunately, neither entity is in a position to contribute financially towards the landfill tipping fees. This setback has only strengthened our resolve to seek support from the community and kind-hearted individuals like you.
