Japanese Student Association at UCLA
Japanese Student Association at UCLA is an official student organization aimed at joining those whom share the Japanese identity, culture, and language, and those whom share an interest in these elements. Our goal is to provide students the opportunity to meet new people from differing backgrounds, to guide students in their career decisions, and to create an open atmosphere so that students can have a memorable time at UCLA.
・Project Overview
We are initiating the acceptance of emergency relief funds for the earthquake damage observed in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, which registered a seismic intensity of 7. We kindly ask for your cooperation in supporting the affected victims.
In Japan, at around 4:10 PM on January 1, 2024, a major earthquake with a maximum intensity of 7 (magnitude 7.6) occurred in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture. A tsunami warning for a tsunami of about 5 meters was issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The damage caused by this earthquake was extensive, with numerous houses and buildings collapsing in various places, especially in the Hokuriku region, and widespread power outages, road uplifts, and cracks occurring. There have also been many reported injuries and deaths, with 168 deaths and 323 missing persons as of January 8, 2024. This tragic event reminds us of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, and the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of January 17, 1995, and many people have already been forced to live in evacuation centers. However, despite this situation being widely reported around the world, difficulties in receiving support from outside Japan are occurring due to language barriers and a lack of information about the earthquake. Therefore, to enable support for those affected in the disaster area from outside Japan, we have established the "Noto Peninsula Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund" on GoFundMe. As there is a concern that the damage may further expand, the Noto Peninsula Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund has started accepting emergency relief donations aimed at supporting the disaster area and victims, and the funds collected from everyone will be provided to the Ishikawa and Toyama Prefectural branches of the Japanese Red Cross Society through GoFundMe. We kindly ask for your warm support.

・Use of Donations
All donations received from everyone will be used to support the lives of those affected in the disaster area and will be provided to the Ishikawa and Toyama Prefectural branches of the Japanese Red Cross Society through GoFundMe. Furthermore, the entire amount of your generous donations will be carefully used for emergency relief activities and recovery support in the disaster-affected areas, for the benefit of the victims and the affected regions. We earnestly request your heartfelt support to ensure that those affected by the disaster can live in a safe and secure environment.

・Finally
Recovery in the disaster-affected areas is expected to take a long time, but we want to move step by step. We wish to bring even a little bit of dreams and hope to the people of Ishikawa Prefecture, who have faced such a tragic day right from the beginning of the New Year on January 1st. We will support Ishikawa Prefecture with all our might. We kindly ask for your warm support.
