SUPPORT LOS ANGELES FIREFIGHTERS

Fire map: Three fires continue to burn uncontrollably in the area: The Palisades fire, west of Los Angeles, has burned about 18 square miles (29 square kilometers). The Eaton fire, north of Pasadena, has burned about 16.5 square miles (42.7 square kilometers). And the Hurst fire, in the San Fernando Valley, has burned nearly a square mile (2.6 square kilometers). At a 5:50 p.m. PST media briefing, an official announced that a new blaze had broken out in the Hollywood Hills near Runyon Canyon.

Evacuation orders: At least 100,000 residents so far are under evacuation orders. Many of the evacuations were in the Pacific Palisades area. Others were in parts of Santa Monica and Altadena.

How did the fires start? Fires don’t usually blaze at this time of year. Still, specific ingredients — supersized Santa Ana winds, extreme drought, and weather whiplash, to name a few — have come together to defy the calendar quickly and violently.

ABOUT ME (Michael Abrams): Growing up in a firefighting family, I've had the great opportunity to learn and experience the dedication and back-breaking work firefighters do to protect our families, homes, and nature. My hometown on Long Island, NY, was a small community, and all year round, we would hang out at the firehouse for community events. This is one of my fondest memories of childhood. My father was a long-time volunteer firefighter, and many of our close friends were too. Unfortunately, we've lost some of these amazing humans in the line of duty.
