Weatherby Lake Believes in Equality!

Citizens of Weatherby Lake:
I call upon the community today because we are privileged. We live in a close-knit community where violence is non-existent and walking down the street isn’t a death sentence. For Ahmaud Arbery (shot for “going for a run while black”) Breonna Taylor (shot by police 8 times in her home, but they had the wrong address) Tony McDade (Trans man shot at protest without probable cause) and George Floyd (death by asphyxiation from an officer’s knee on his neck after 9 minutes) that wasn’t the case. These peoples lives, amongst many, many more, were taken far too soon from their mothers, children, wives, and communities. As Americans living in the “land of the free, home of the brave”, it is every single person’s responsibility to be BRAVE. We all need to be brave TOGETHER in these uncertain times in order to come out on the other side and consider ourselves truly living in the “land of the free.”
We cannot stand for police “making the wrong call” anymore. Black lives are ending tragically at the hands of police and a broken justice system. The unjust brutality and slaying of African Americans by the very people that should be PROTECTING them MUST END NOW! City of Weatherby Lake, we need to use our privilege for GOOD and CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY! Time is out to sit around and do nothing. African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites. The Department of Justice found that blacks were 3 times more likely to be searched during a traffic stop than white motorists. This is NOT a coincidence. This is due to implicit biases and straight up racism that is woven into the very fabric of our criminal justice system and police forces.
BUT....... YOUR VOICE MATTERS! SO, SO MUCH! HERE IS HOW YOU CAN MAKE A CHANGE!
1. DONATE TO THIS FUND! This is one VERY impactful way you can help! Your money will go to organizations well-versed in advocacy work and will ensure your money goes towards ending police brutality and against anti-racism in our communities. I created this page as a safe space members of the community can donate to all in one place. There are many great organizations accepting donations to support the black community; All money raised through this campaign will be split amongst these 4 amazing organizations striving for equal rights for African Americans.
1) The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund: America’s premier legal organization fighting for racial justice. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans.
2) National Bail Out: A Black-led and Black-centered collective of abolitionist organizers, lawyers and activists building a community-based movement to support our folks and end systems of pretrial detention and ultimately mass incarceration.
3) Antiracist Research and Policy Center: Fund teams of scholars, policymakers, journalists, and advocates to examine racial problems anew, innovate and broadcast practical policy solutions, and work with policymakers to implement them.
4) Black Visions Collective: Black-led, Queer and Trans centering organization whose mission is to organize powerful, connected Black communities and dismantle systems of violence. This is done through establishing strategic campaigns, investing in Black leadership, as well as engaging in cultural and narrative organization.

“The racial disparities have deprived people of color of their most basic civil rights, making criminal-justice reform the civil rights issue of our time. Through mass imprisonment and the overrepresentation of individuals of color within the criminal justice and prison system, people of color have experienced an adverse impact on themselves and on their communities from barriers to reintegrating into society to engaging in the democratic process. Eliminating the racial disparities inherent to our nation’s criminal-justice policies and practices must be at the heart of a renewed, refocused, and reenergized movement for racial justice in America.” (americanprogress.org)
