William Lovell Modery just turned one on the 16th of August. Several weeks prior, he had a strange yellowing/bruising over his eyes. He was seen by his Dr. who assured them that it was just bruises and should go away in a couple of weeks. Unhappy with no definitive answers, his parents went for a second opinion and eventually changed his primary care. The new Doctors took blood work and said that he was anemic but the bruising around the eyes stumped them. They put him on iron for 2 weeks and would recheck then. He got 2 days worth of iron and became extremely lethargic and the bruising became much more extreme. They took him to Millinocket Regional Hospital on 8/26 where they drew blood and did a cat scan. They discovered a tumor that’s pressing on his eyes causing the bruising. They also found one on his Kidney. They believed both were cancerous, Neuroblastoma, but sent him by ambulance to Bangor do more testing and to meet with a pediatric neurologist and oncologist. They did another scan as well as an MRI under sedation, and have given him a blood transfusion. After all the imaging was done, they have discovered that he’s got two big tumors, one in his head behind his eyes and one over his left kidney on his adrenal gland. There are 7 in his liver and 1 on his chest wall, as well as a several in his lungs. They will put in a central line and do a bone marrow biopsy on Monday the 31st and will know more on the treatment plan but as of right now, this little angel is looking at at least 4-6 months of treatment.
