The time has come for us to upgrade Alex to a big boy bed! Unfortunately Alex has outgrown his cot and continues to become stuck between the gaps of the cot. Due to Alexs inability to safely transition in and out of a typical bed as well as him needing to be in an enclosed, safe space due to thr unpredictable nature of his seizures, we are limited in our choices for a suitable bed. Fortunately, we have found the perfect bed, custom made to suit Alexs needs by a man in Brisbane. Unfortunately, this bed will cost us $3,449 and the mattress will cost $850, plus bedding. Unfortunately beds purchased through special needs companies come at an enormous cost, 5 times the cost of this custom made one we have found, and they generally dont have the option of choosing your own mattress - something that is extremely important to us for Alex so that he is comfortable and has a good nights sleep. The design we have decided on is basically a king single sized cot, with high rails, 5cm apart and a slat along the bottom edges to stop limbs sticking out and getting stuck. The bed has swing out doors for easy access making it less of a back breaking task putting Alex to bed, and the height from floor to the top of mattress will make it possible for Alex to easily transition from wheelchair to bed as he becomes heavier and we are unable to lift him.
