Adler Bear Carris is 10 years old battling inoperable pilomyxoid astrocytoma metastasized brain cancer. He has been battling since he was 4 years old.
He also has hydrocephalus as well. He suffers with daily chronic pain as well.
This journey had been going for nearly 7 years now.
This is the most recent part of his cancer story:
Adler had his 6 month MRI and it showed a change. His oncologist took it to the tumor board and after two meetings, they agreed it's time to do something as they looked back over two years and agree it's been slowly growing since. It was very hard news to hear especially because of the continued pain he's been in.
They did a biopsy of his cervical spine testing for the BRAF mutation and it was positive. He was enrolled in a two year trial for a drug that targets the tumor. We are now traveling to Chicago monthly for check ups and med pick up. He has MRIs every other month as well to check the status of the tumors, echocardiograms/EKGs every three months to check his heart and labs along with his medication pick up monthly.
We are thankful for the study and we hope for great success! It was the best option out of the options we had and we are glad there are still options available for him.
And unfortunately the 5+ hour biopsy surgery left him without the use of his arms. He's now in rehab for occupational therapy and physical therapy to hopefully regain the use and strength in his arms which has progressed greatly in a year's time.
He will now be undergoing a cervical spinal fusion surgery.

How much more freedom will cancer take from him?
His strength is endless and his love and light are contagious but this journey has been long, taxing and just absolutely exhausting. Physically, emotionally and financially. The travel to and from Chicago will be repetitive for a very long time.
During this time of treatment we look for joy in the good times we can have as a family. We revel in the good and appreciate the life he has. As we have always looked for the light and the joy even in his stability. There is a finish line....we hope.
Then it's as we say, Bold As Love, and we'll do all we can to give Adler wonderful memories and beautiful experiences along the way so his quality of life is as full as it can be!!
