Toronto Peer-to-Peer Food Relief

It all started with a request for a banana.

Recently, someone posted on the online trading website Bunz looking for a banana. They weren't starving but money was running low and buying fresh, healthy food just wasn’t possible at that moment. Kate Salter responded but never heard back. Later that night, still thinking about it, she posted an offer to provide fresh produce and homemade healthy meals to those experiencing food insecurity never expecting the response that would be received. Word spread and more requests came in. There was clearly a need in downtown Toronto for discreet peer-to-peer food relief.

Intermittent or occasional food instability is experienced by people for lots of reasons. Between contracts? Big vet bill? Eating ramen and KD because you can’t afford anything else? This can happen to anyone. It’s not a turning to a food bank or soup kitchen kind of situation, but food that meets nutritional needs at times like these is important.

In response to Kate’s efforts there have been offers to donate food, drop off donations, cook, build a garden, throw a fundraiser and everything in between.

A group supported by the Bunz administration team has begun to form to develop a direction for this initiative and coordinate efforts in the most useful way. The key need that has been identified is for discreet, peer-to-peer handoffs of fresh produce and healthy prepared foods.

In the meantime requests for food help keep coming in and the healthy food donations can’t keep up. People have dug into their pockets and kitchens but that can only go so far.

In light of the number of requests for "produce packs" coming in, financial donations to address these needs in the short term are being accepted. We are not a charitable organization but in return we can offer you a thanks and a virtual high five.
