On Friday, January 27th, tragedy struck the Ocean City Community and devasted the lives of numerous families when a horrific fire destroyed the house located at 932 Simpson Avenue, Ocean City, New Jersey.
The Victims of this devasting incident include
- 1st Floor - A Family of 4 including one teen enrolled at OCHS.
- 2nd Floor - A Family of 5 including three young children
- Rear Cottage - A Family of 4 including two young children.
- 10 other Individuals living in single rooms on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Floor & Rear Cottage.
This complete list of all victims has been compiled by the Ocean City Police Department, the American Red Cross Association, and El Pueblo Unido Community Organization.
El Pueblo Unido is in constant communication with all 23 community members affected by this devastating fire.
The 2nd Floor was completely burned by the fire and all residents on this floor have lost all their possessions including documents, clothing, work tools, electronics, money and other valuables.
The 1st Floor has been completely flooded and is uninhabitable (walls and ceilings are falling apart) due to the amount of water that was necessary to put out the fire above. There is no electricity at all in this unit and residents have lost many possessions including documents, work tools, furniture, food, and electronics.
The 3rd Floor has sustained damage due to the fire below and many possessions have been damaged due to the flames and smoke. The entire 3rd Floor may be structurally unfit for residents to move back in.
The rear cottage received no physical damage from the fire however all residents have been evacuated from the property due to a gas leak that has not been contained and still poses a serious threat moving forward.
Thank you to the City of Ocean City for providing all residents displaced by the fire with immediate hotel rooms for (2) nights.
An additional thank you to the American Red Cross volunteers that were on site immediately and provided one-time emergency financial assistance to all victims involved for immediate needs.
We are currently working with countless other organizations, churches, businesses, and kind neighbors to provide hot meals, clothing, gift cards and hygienic supplies over the next few days. Please contact us if you would like to donate any of these items as well and we can connect you directly to the victims involved.
All Victims of this tragic fire are asking for your help in finding and financing new permanent housing while they work hard to regain stability. All money collected will be used by the families to cover the Security Deposit and 1st Months Rent for new apartments but more importantly, the money will be used to fund a fresh start for everyone that lost everything in this devastating fire.
Additionally, the Victims will need help buying furniture and mattresses to sleep on, clothing/shoes, work tools, groceries, appliances and other startup needs.
Lastly, thank you to the Ocean City Fire Department and the Firefighters that risked their lives to put out this devastating fire. We thank you for your service to the community.
